My family insist on using the fireplace because they have some backward ideas about it being natural and cheaper because there’s so much wood around here. They use it way more than necessary, and use more wood than necessary, so a load runs out very fast and it often gets so hot they have to open the windows.

I like the aesthetic, but it’s a massive waste of time and money. Sourcing wood is expensive. Stacking it takes a lot of time, during which I could be doing productive work.

I’m sure the smoke is affecting our health, too. If I go for an early run on a cold morning the smoke hanging in the air makes it much harder to breath.

I might understand if there wasn’t a very good heat pump right there. The running costs of it are barely noticeable.

  • Car theft is more likely to be acted on than any other kind of theft, in my experience, but it still has to be convenient for them.

One time my car was stolen, I knew it had only just happened so they were certainly still driving it near my home, and the police just said sorry, we’ll let you know if it turns up somewhere. I called back a few minutes later when I remembered that it’s on a car share program so I can track the location via GPS - that got them interested, and I stayed on the phone giving updates while it took them only 20 minutes to make an arrest.

The same car got stolen a couple of years later, when I wasn’t able to track it live. I located it myself, and they just turned up to do a few minutes of forensics then left.

They’re definitely understaffed. When I went to the station to do a report there was only one constable in the building, even though it was a time of day/week when they’re extra busy.

  • It’s the shape of things, too. They have no character.

I was shopping for door knobs recently, because all the knobs in this house are spherical and smooth. They’re impossible to grip. We have a disabled person in the house who struggles to turn them. Gloves slip right off.

At the hardware store is an entire aisle full of doorknobs, but nearly all of them are the exact same smooth spherical shape. The rest were ugly rectangular lever styles that work but look very industrial in a home that’s mostly natural textures.

Somehow all these brands, finishes, locking features, price ranges, dozens of product variations, and literally only two doorknob shapes. Both so minimalist as to be almost impractical.

I had to settle for the lever style for one door, and just put grip tape on the others.

  • Bazzite is made for gaming, so it’s a safe choice in that regard.

They recently released a DX (developer experience) spin, which I’ve been running lately. That feels very similar to the other atomic Fedora developer spins, so it has a lot of creative software working well. I’ve used GIMP, Inkscape, Darktable etc. on it, and there’s even some nice automation to install/update DaVinci Resolve.

They’re also working on a GDX (game developer experience) spin, which should be even better. You might want to check that out when it’s ready.
