  • Indigenous groups have always fairly reliably voted KMT. The DPP tends to have much more progressive policies and portray themselves as more concerned about the indigenous struggle. But the KMT being the direct successor of the authoritarian government that ruled Taiwan for decades tends to have much deeper local structures and have thus been present in indigenous territories much more/for much longer.

(Also portraying the parties as Chinese or Taiwanese nationalists probably is a bit strong, as they’ve both moved towards more moderate, pro-status quo positions, although from different ends of the spectrum)

  • I don’t update daily, but rather every once in a while

Sounds like Slowroll could be for you then. Even if TW is updated infrequently, it’s still a roll of the die whether that specific snapshot you will be updating to will be one of the rare ones that have some issues. In theory at least, Slowroll should fix that by trying to handpick some select promising snapshots. Whether that works out as intended in practice will remain to be seen of course, as backporting some security fixes ca of course also introduce potential instabilities.

  • The DPP wasn’t even a very instrumental actor in the sunflower movement. It was largely student led and of those people that participated in it that went into politics, most went to different smaller parties. I lived in the country during the time that happened and to claim that foreign interference played any meaningful role is just absurd on its face. Maybe don’t try patronizing entire populaces from afar as if they somehow weren’t able to make their own decisions and come to their own conclusions.

Why do people consider bigger age gaps a problem? Because there’s often a difference in maturity and experience that makes it harder to communicate, have the same goals and often puts the younger party at risk of being taken advantage of.

So if you think that the thing the age gap is a stand in for, a gap in maturity, doesn’t apply, there’s also no reason to get hung up on the number and mistake the map for the territory.

I think it’s good that you’re questioning yourself though and you should probably keep being a bit cautious about the situation and reevaluating yourself until you can be certain you two are on the same level.
