My biggest vice is definitely drugs. Weed and alcohol mostly.

They/Them
“There were two “Reigns of Terror,” if we would but remember it and consider it; the one wrought murder in hot passion, the other in heartless cold blood; the one lasted mere months, the other had lasted a thousand years; the one inflicted death upon ten thousand persons, the other upon a hundred millions; but our shudders are all for the “horrors” of the minor Terror, the momentary Terror, so to speak; whereas, what is the horror of swift death by the axe, compared with lifelong death from hunger, cold, insult, cruelty, and heart-break? What is swift death by lightning compared with death by slow fire at the stake? A city cemetery could contain the coffins filled by that brief Terror which we have all been so diligently taught to shiver at and mourn over; but all France could hardly contain the coffins filled by that older and real Terror—that unspeakably bitter and awful Terror which none of us has been taught to see in its vastness or pity as it deserves.” - Mark Twain

91·4 days agoFascism cannot be stopped with your vote. Hitler wasn’t elected and he certainly couldn’t be removed by election. This is the same for Mussolini, Petain, Franco, Hirohito, etc. We don’t “show up” IRL to vote against fascism because we recognize it is a ridiculous exercise in futility. We do show up IRL at our political organizations which lead protests against the Palestinian genocide, fascism, ecocide, the illegal blockade of Cuba and so so much more. Not only do we educate people politically and agitate within our workplaces and community spaces, we (attempt to) build lasting parties that materially provide for the communities they rely on. So far we haven’t had great success and overthrown the bourgeois state, that is because things take time and we are faced with both very powerful enemies and a very well conditioned public.

I genuinely wonder if liberals are literate. Do you even try to read what we write?

For some texts I’ll live with a PDF but there is a satisfaction in physical books. My university library has been filling the void but I want have access to it much longer 😔
Honestly same outside of books. My local book stores just don’t have what I need.
Thank you comrade. Hadn’t seen this before ❤️

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•[please list what they are about topicwise] Do you have a favored podcast you like to listen to while cleaning or cooking?English
1·7 days agoThe Deprogram - three communists from three parts of the world yapping about a variety of topics tangentially or directly related to communism but with enough humor that it isn’t so depressing. Sometimes have really interesting guests on the show.
Fall of Civilizations - narrative histories following the rise and fall of various cultures. Degree of depth varies.
Blowback - in depth examinations of US imperial policy through the medium of a extremely well produced narrative history. Each season focuses on the US relationship to a specific country during a specific timeframe. Can’t recommend enough.
The Ancient World - A semi-chonological retelling of ancient history. It’s arguable that West Asia is the focus but it delves into a lot of other regions as well.
The Magnus Archives - Eldritch horror/mystery audio drama following a skeptical archivist of public paranormal accounts slowly piecing together connections between the accounts and discovering his own relation to them. 10/10 listened to all 200 episodes of this about 3 times through.

22·12 days agoIt’s a nice place. I’ve never had any issues with it. I like that I have a space to be with like-minded people after spending most of my time around people who very much aren’t. I like that I don’t often encounter racism and while I do encounter misogyny it is less common here than other online spaces
yes, I guess I wasn’t fully clear on my position and I apologize for that. I do not believed there was a single state on this earth that had the political will to take the effective measures required to prevent spread in time. I personally believe this is due to how our economies are structured.
I never meant to imply that nothing should have been done or greater measures shouldn’t have been taken sooner but we can only view this retrospectively. I struggle to believe an airborne disease as contagious as covid would not have found a route out of China other than passenger planes before stricter measures were taken. This is not a matter of whether it is possible to contain such a disease but a matter of whether such procedures had a chance of being implemented quickly enough before the disease was understood.
