  • Trump just seems to repeat the thoughts of the last person he spoke to that actually got through to him somehow. Why Putin seems to be so good at doing that is anyone’s guess.

In any case, this will continue until he meets some European leaders again. I think the person who flipped him last time seems to have been King Charles?

But this all just shows it doesn’t even matter. As Orwell said:

“The enemy is the gramophone mind, whether or not one agrees with the record that is being played at the moment.”

He is too dumb to do anything else. The record will be changed and changed back again and again.

  • And this from the press release:

In its long history, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has honoured brave women and men who have stood up to repression, who have carried the hope of freedom in prison cells, on the streets and in public squares, and who have shown by their actions that peaceful resistance can change the world. […]

When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognise courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist. Democracy depends on people who refuse to stay silent, who dare to step forward despite grave risk, and who remind us that freedom must never be taken for granted, but must always be defended – with words, with courage and with determination.

  • What I saw a lot of on Lemmy was democrat supporters and voters insisting that people will just hold their nose and vote for Harris and accusing anybody angry about the ongoing genocide of either supporting Trump or playing into the hands of Russia.

Any statement posted on Lemmy is directed at the voters, not the leadership, and assuming otherwise is arguing in bad faith.

Did I do that? Very confused.

The voters had the opportunity to stop Trump. They didn’t.

Ah yes, it’s all the voters’ fault.

If only the DNC had any power at all in this situation or ability to influence the actions of voters…

  • Okay, so I would be equally justified in saying: Liberals, this is what you get when you assume people must vote for you.

THANK YOU. This far down the road and they’re still ignoring this aspect.

Yes protest voters choosing to make things worse for Palestine and everyone in the US is stupid.

AND liberals and especially the party leadership made a huge miscalculation in assuming everyone would vote for “not Trump.”

Both contributed to the loss. Which is more to blame? There’s a discussion to be had there but imo the overall electoral strategy is a much bigger issue than a handful of stupid people who didn’t vote or voted Trump over this one particular issue

  • The author seems to think that if we’re mad about the Nazi salute we aren’t mad about the other stuff. Like does saying “yes it was obviously a Nazi salute you dumb fuck” stop me from standing up for people’s rights or showing courage when it’s needed? Of course not.

This is what happens to commentators when they have to say something that seems smart but actually have no point to make. The salute is a wake up call for the unengaged and an easy way to see what is really happening. But that doesn’t make for a holier than thou think piece so the author doesn’t give a shit.

Debating it is pointless though. Just show people the video and if they are still connected to reality at all there is no discussion needed.

  • Interesting link! Weird takeaway though. For one, it’s 67% consistently voting or not, 2/3 vs 4/5 is a big difference. Second, look at 2020. People who didn’t usually vote were most likely to vote then and they swayed dem. Probably because Trump was bad enough to make them more passionate about voting.

This shows that about a third of voters are intermittent and therefore available if people get them excited enough. I’m not saying it’s a good thing (it’s not), I’m just saying it’s a thing. Acting like they’re not important is turning your back on the people who could ultimately sway elections.

And that’s before we think about how many of the consistent non voters are apathetic vs how many just don’t have anyone they feel represents them.
