I was recently looking at the data from the last presidential election and it continues to be disappointing.

It’s kind of to be expected, I suppose. It takes time for people to learn that they need to vote, so you’ll always see a higher percentage vote in each older group. The data I was looking at showed it peaked at about 75% around 55, then dropped very slightly for people older.

So highest percentage of voters are in the “Fuck! I thought I was going to be able to retire, but I’m going to have to work till I die!” group (my people). Slightly lower among the “The world’s turning to shit, but at least I’ll die before it gets really bad” group.

I’ve often thought that, in addition to making election day a holiday, states should give some kind of encouragement to bring kids into the polling places. My wife and I always brought our kids in with us, specifically to make sure they would see us voting. They’ve all voted in every election they were eligible to vote in.

They don’t have to say they are dangerous. In fact, if their tongues don’t cut themselves loose and jump out of their mouths on their own, they can claim that the groups are innocent patriotic social organizations targeted by the evil antifa terrorists.

Yeah. You have to be alive to be oppressed.

In most cases, when the violence reaches the point of complete destruction of the entire government, what rises to replace it is exponentially worse.

Unfortunately, that’s the tipping point that results in massive innocent suffering and deaths.

The only people who think that’s a good thing are the people who are lying to themselves about how bad it will be.

Violence does work to change society, but usually not immediately.

Slave rebellions in the US led to people changing their views of slavery and strengthened the abolitionist cause

The Haymarket Affair led to increased labor protections

Coal wars led to improved mine safety standards

Stonewall basically created the movements that seek to protect LGBTQ+ people.

Attica prison riot resulted in reforms of prison management.

Watts rebellion changed views on poverty and discrimination

1992 LA uprising led to increased attention on police misconduct

Of course, none of the people involved in the violence saw immediate improvements, and most of them suffered for their involvement.

Violence informs the Epstein class that they’ve pushed too far, so they ratchet things back a bit to try to keep their heads.

Don’t pretend that they care about the signs and chants or some commuter inconvenience. They’re motivated by a fear of starvation, fire, and blood.

Also, if you look at some of the examples I listed, the violence was started by the police or private security sent to suppress otherwise non-violent (albeit loud and threatening) protest.

None of the No-Kings protests have become anything that anyone would feel the need to suppress. However, they give a small chance of hope that it will lead to something real.

Others have answered, but you reminded me of some disturbing audio that I had heard.

It’s audio from Reagan’s white house press conferences when a reporter asked for comments about the growing AIDS crisis. It’s disturbing because it shows how casually people joked about gay men dying.

It’s worth listening to. It both shows how far we’ve come and also shows how important it is to not lose any ground in the fight to protect marginalized groups.
