Correctly? A few Dems mention “gun control” sometimes, mostly to appease anti-gun voters, but among elected Democratic office-holders there’s zero call for taking away gun rights.

Ha — how did you get to know my family so well? I’m not interested in conversation with people who aren’t interested in conversation, so I no longer engage — unless they say something stupid or fascist in my presence.

In a position commanding a wide public audience, Jonathan Rauch has spent years speaking against us and mocking us. Today, he’s had an epiphany and figured out he’s been well-paid to be wrong. That’s cool. “Welcome to the fight. This time I know our side will win,” and all that.

I’m not going to waste any effort kicking him today, but I’m also not shocked, not scolding anyone who doesn’t welcome Jonathan Rauch with a bouquet of flowers and wet kisses. Anyway, in five days or five minutes he’ll decide we’re wrong again. Shrug.

Resigning would be counterproductive, short-term and especially in the long-term, but I’d be delighted if one or two sane members of the SC went on strike, by ditching the legal lingo and issuing plain-English dissents.

As absolutely always, when you find a Republican office-holder with a smidgen of empathy, it’s because the outrage in question affects them personally. If it’s not about them or their family, the cruelty is fine, even enjoyable.

I too spent some of my childhood in the American South, and also several years in my 40s. My distaste for the South is well informed, and it’s my only prejudice that doesn’t embarrass me.

There are good people and bad people everywhere, and smart people and stupid people everywhere, but there’s a noticeably higher percentage of bad, stupid people in the South.

Thanks for this. I’m a few thousand miles from Illinois, so my Pritzker awareness isn’t robust, but with what you’ve written and quoted here, I’m moving him to my list of good guy Democratic politicians.
