If you don’t know this band, just check them here. Nuff said.
I like the music and the execution, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t bored of the conversation around them.
It especially bothers me when people talk about their use of microtonality as if they’ve revolutionized the concept. There’s plenty of existing, established music systems that use microtones constantly, with millions of people listening daily. In their system, they are just tones that exist in different modes or hierarchies, not microtones, but we tend to dismiss is as foreign and therefore irrelevant to eurocentric music standards.
That’s not to say that everyone is doing this. I just happen to see it more often, personally.

Dumb question, but do I have to be on lemmy.ca to post in the new community?
nah, just follow this link : [email protected]
Thanks. Apparently the problem is my client app. It works when I use a different one. So nothing wrong with the community 🙂
Thanks – my fault using the wrong way to link to the community! Fixed now.
Yesss. I had this thought and you beat me to it. Thanks!
There’s, uh, no link to the new community?
Yeah, it’s because my brain has only two neurons and both were still used to listen to them, sorry. Fixed now!
I’m going to come across as a hater, but is it just for the five songs they released or can we share similar music too?
They have two albums out now.
Yes that catalog is impressive enough to warrant an entire community for the hour of music they released, and your comment helps me see if I can participate in the community by sharing similar music and finding similar music.
I am totally not interested since I think microtonal music should exclusively be used in experimental classical music as a technical exercise and not as a form of expression for common people.
I certainly don’t think the fans of AP should get to experience microtonal music in culturally relevant contexts
Yikes.
Wow, this comment is asinine.
You seem to care way too much about something you don’t want to care about.
Let people have their fun.
… I want to have fun with the people, just you know, by interfacing it on my own terms, or to leave them alone otherwise. And the band is exploding overnight compared to their meager catalog, which, you know, good for them, but because I listened to 2 out of their 6 songs on youtube the logarithm thinks I’m obsessed with them. They are good and making a poppy version of a niche thing, go them. They aren’t King Lizard tier yet though.
King Gizzard is absurdly prolific so I’m not sure it’s entirely fair to compare other bands to them lol
But yeah they were certainly my first thought for the ‘microtonal rock’ inspiration. But there were others like Secret Chiefs 3 experimenting with this stuff even back in the 90s.
I think they make good and original music, but yeah I’m not sure they can keep this up for too long. My feeling is they’ll do maybe another album and then go back to bar gigs in Quebec making experimental stuff.
I dunno, they could go far. They’ve got an interesting sound and microtonal pop/rock western music (instead of avant garde classical/electronic, or music from cultures that have microtonal systems) is a fairly unexplored territory that can lead to them making lots of new songs for a good while.
It’s just that they are a bit new to get ALL THIS attention. Social media algorithms seem to have latched on to the very hard.
Which is why I want to participate if we can compensate with the sparse catalog with tangentially related music, otherwise it’s going to be really boring seeing photos from their tours doing the same songs over and over again, and see when actual news happen.
I agree. I’m sure anyone is this community would enjoy recommendations to similar music!
Sharing similar music is of course interesting.
But this is a community for fans. Discussions about the technical skills, production volume, or whatever of other bands are welcome, as long as they’re made in a non-disparaging way. I think one has the right to be a fan of something or someone, and to enjoy its popularity if that happens.
Of course you have the right not to like something or not to agree with its popularity. But If your point is to be disparaging, it probably makes more sense to create a community for similarly-minded people: you can criticize the band or its popularity there as much as you like without offending one another.
Hey, I’m all for AP becoming a big band and having fans. I think they’re doing good work, and I highlighted that in another post.
As long as it is a meeting point for similar music I would like to participate, or it might be a bit banal seeing the same thing over and over again. I’ll pitch something in later
I’d be quite happy if there was like a more general math-rock community.
Both of you are insufferable and I hate this band now
