On a bitterly cold recent morning in the Canadian Arctic, about 70 people took to the streets. Braving the bone-chilling winds, they marched through the Inuit-governed territory of Nunavut, waving signs that read: “We stand with Greenland” and “Greenland is a partner, not a purchase.”
It was a glimpse of how, for Indigenous peoples across the Arctic, the battle over Greenland has become a wider reckoning, seemingly pitting the long-fought battle to assert their rights against a global push for power.
Donald Trump’s tug-of-war over Greenland recalled “centuries of imperialism by different nation states but also colonisation by different actors”, said Natan Obed, the president of Canada’s national Inuit organisation, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami.
Particularly concerning was the focus on Greenland’s efforts to extract mineral wealth or create defence positions, said Obed. “That’s the scariest part of the rhetoric that has been circulating,” he said. “I did believe we were beyond this central premise that if Indigenous peoples do not improve our land based on the criteria of imperialist actors, that somehow we do not have self-determination. The decisions that are made about our land and what we want for it are ours alone.”
I think once he moves to take Greenland, it’ll be more of an extermination than a colonization:
He wants the minerals, with no debate/frustration,
he needs the leverage to snuff Canada’s EU-lifeline, when he enforces his annexation of Canada ( “51st state” my ass: he wants total-destruction of autonomy from all territory, & he wants total continental kingdom, no matter what )
He’s put in place the 2-sides of the “coin” he needs to be genociding the “woke” from within the US:
the de-naturalization law & the ICE paramilitary for eradicating all whom he will denaturalize…
Framing it in 1900’s colonialism, instead of nazi-style industriousness … is profoundly missing the point.
Everybody who isn’t worshipping Trump, soon, is going to be fighting-for-their-lives, in the Americas, & that is going to be continuing until Trump dies, once the tippingpoint is crossed: years later.
( & then Musk’ll probably take Trump’s place as king/“president” in the Republican regime, to continue the ideological-war )
The ONLY chance that the civilrights people have, for surviving what’s coming, is to also do a 2-sides-coin:
- alliance, of all whom Trump’s cult will be militarily-rampaging, together, &
- no-weak-points combined-arms fight, fighting-for resilience among the allies, & fighting to break the enemy’s machine.
As … Senger? something like that ( philosopher ), noted in his book on effective altruism, sometimes opposing evil-regime means taking-position-within-it & doing what one can to make it ineffective.
Ideologues ( of the left ) have fairly-consistently disallowed that position as valid, but it’s correct.
All the people of the left who got out of the Republicans’ way as a means of “protest” against Trump’s regime’s excesses, GAVE them leverage, while pretending that that is what “protest” means, & the newspapers used to be having multiple stories on that sort of thing, for awhile…
Better to be the “sand in the gears”, remaining in-place, than to get out of the machine’s way & help them have more velocity in their mission.
Canada ought be arming the people of the north: Trump’s going to be doing all he can to get in everywhere, while bombing Canada’s south, later this year…
The idiocy of pretending that “status quo” will “protect” us, & this will all go back to some reasserted-normal…
…many-lives-obliterating delusion.
