Crack addicts oppose ban on crack
You should NEVER be banned from access to information. What you do with it, how you interpret it and where you get it should be up to you. Fuck this lust for power and control over information. Dont let yourself be easily manipulated.
Teenagers oppose a ban on something they love and are addicted to.
the real purpose of the ban is to curb the growing political awareness of young people
Hot take. Maybe people shouldn’t be getting their political awareness from algorithmic sites. For every teen who learns Gaza etc there’s 10 that learn about the Manosphere and how bad vaccines are.
That’s sort of the problem with… reality, man. Both you and this kid are right, life isn’t black and white and there are a lot moving parts.
You’re 100% right that nobody should be getting political information from social media. This kid stating that is showing his age. Social media is a cess pool to become politically informed.
But he’s also right that this sort of thing can be a slippery slope.
That’s a line from the news site’s reporter, not the kid. It’s a slippery slope though for sure, but because of the age verification thing. They ought to ban black box ranking outright for all ages.
Are you aware that you are currently commenting on a news post on an algorithmic social media site?
Lemmy algorithm is based as hell though since purely shows you what is popular since it is not from a profit-driven source. Big tech closed source algorithms are designed from profit incentives because of capitalism. When people are talking about “The algorithm”, they usually mean the latter. There’s nothing wrong with getting your news from Lemmy.
Wouldn’t this headline have worked when cigarettes were made 18+? And this was known ahead of time through surveys so how is this news or commentary on how policy is going this early into it being enacted?
Well, yeah. Pretty sure highschoolers have been opposed to this the entire time, but isn’t the entire point that nobody cares about their opinion on this?
I feel like the real reason for the social media ban is to establish some kind of digital ID program and requiring that ID for everything a person does online. That makes it possible to curate not only where you can go online, but what you see when you get there. It is being sold as a way to “protect the children” but the reality is the children are the target audience. Children don’t have many preconceived notions about privacy, so violating their privacy will be so much easier.
Remember, in just a few years these “children” will be adults and any changes made for them today will eventually become the normal for everyone.
Australia has digital ID since 2019 so no. Digital ID has nothing to do with it. UK doesn’t have digital ID but requires identification online. Many other countries do have digital ID but don’t require it anywhere online. Please stop using “digital ID” as some scary thing government will create to track people. It already exists and it’s not what it’s used for.
The Netherlands has had digital ID (DigiD) since 2005 or something. It’s basically just a government account that allows you to do official stuff online, like your tax returns. You’re not forced to use or even have a DigiD, but it does make some things easier because you can do all your government business online in stead of filling out papers or having to visit actual buildings.
Sadly I can’t use mine at the moment, because I switched phone numbers when I moved to another country and forgot to change it, and now my multi-step verification won’t work and I’d have to go there to ID myself in person to reactivate it. :p
Edit: Was curious so looked it up. DigiD has existed in the Netherlands since 2003, though the name was changed to DigiD in 2004.
In Spain we just have a SHA-256 certificate signed by the government certification authority. You can download a file but you also have it on your ID. The file can be imported into Firefox and used for authentication on government websites. You can also sign documents with it and it’s a valid, legal signature.
IIRC the policy is more intended to lessen the appeal of SM for kids currently too young to know about it one way or another. I’ll be curious to see how it goes once they reach their teens.
What is “SM”? I’m across the big pond and don’t understand
Presumably Social Media
