My dear older brother has found himself sucked into the Hot Wheels craze, it’s sad and frustrating to see. In one hour, he’ll make ten jokes about “Funko Pops” and talk about what progress he’s making engine swapping his truck and the next will tell me in complete sincerity he’s driving to a Target 90 minutes away because of a Facebook post he saw saying that some apparently rare and valuable toy car was a spotted there a few hours ago. I do not get it. I do not want to get it.
I guess if he enjoys it, and it’s not putting him in financial peril, then it’s probably one of the more harmless hobbies/habits someone could have.
My 8-year-old autistic son is super into Hot Wheels. Hundreds of cars, a bunch of tracks, some of the video games, all kinds of stuff. I bribe him with one of the $2 ones if he can behave in the store while we’re shopping. Half the time when he’s picking one out there’s a late teens/early 20s adult there sorting through them like I saw them do with Pokemon cards a few years ago.
You know this means a hot wheels movie is incoming.

It’s been a minute since I was at a retail store for opening. But it was always the Hot Wheels guys that did the whole speed-walking to the car aisle routine. My ass was regular-walking to the action figure aisle, like a normal person.
