It’s algorithmic, targeted advertising that’s the real problem.
IMO, the same advert should be shown to all users (at least per country) so that targeting political bullshitting / “advertising” can be knocked on the head, as well as the adverts logged in a public system so they can be reviewed and the funder identified.
I would absolutely support a law to ban targeted advertising. Contextual advertising (based only on the content being viewed) is the only ethical form of advertising (if that’s not an oxymoron), and the surveillance apparatus built to enable targeted advertising is going to be remembered as one of the biggest mistakes in human history - if we ever manage to move past it.
